A traffic accident is a stressful situation in which it is easy to make a mistake that later makes it harder to claim compensation. Here is the sequence of steps I recommend.
1. Secure the scene
Turn on your hazard lights, set up the warning triangle and check for injuries. Safety always comes first.
2. Call the authorities
For both property damage and injuries, always call the police. The official report is key evidence in any later proceedings.
3. Preserve the evidence
Photograph the vehicles, their position on the road, the damage and the traffic signs. Note down the details of witnesses and the other party.
4. Do not sign anything you do not understand
Before accepting any statement of fault or an offer from an insurance company, consult a lawyer. Accepting too quickly often means less compensation than you are entitled to.
